20 Smart Tips To Make Moving a Breeze

The majority of people dread going.  Packing, organizing, transporting, trying to bribe your friends to help -- the entire process can seem daunting, but if you use these tips and tricks, moving day may be a whole lot less stressful.  Happy packing!

1.  Be thrifty, locate free moving boxes
Save a little money and get all of the boxes you need at no cost.  Best areas: the'free' section on Craigslist, grocery and clothing stores, and warehouse style stores.

2.  Purge your stuff
Now that you are sorting through all your items, it's the ideal time to see what could be contributed or chucked altogether!  Make an effort to pare down your possessions so your move will be a touch easier and your new home will be a bit less cluttered.

3.  Create a schedule so you don't get overwhelmed
Plan ahead!  Do not forget to defrost, towel dry, and wash your refrigerator 24-48 hours before moving day.  Otherwise, it is going to be pretty stinky and leaky!

4.  Take pictures of your electronic equipment before you unplug
Before you disconnect them to be booted, take a picture in your phone or camera of the wires on the back of your television and other electronic equipment so that you can recall where they go!  This will save a ton of time once you set this up again.

5.  Put hanging clothes in garbage bags
 If you get to a new abode, simply take off the garbage bags.  Do not forget to label so you know whose stuff is !

9.  Use Wine Cases For Your Glassware
There's certain to be a local bar, winery, as well as a few grocery stores which have vacant wine cases you can snag.  Keeps your glasses organized and it's easy to stuff some newspaper and such in each compartment so there is some padding to protect them.

Use egg cartons to easily transfer your jewelry.  Tape them shut so that nothing falls out!  Also, use toilet paper rolls for packaging loose or necklace bracelets.  Just put one end through the roster and secure the clasp.

If you need to dismantle any furniture to your move, don't forget to keep all of the loose screws and bolts organized!  Set them in plastic baggies and tag them so you know which bit of furniture they'r to get and don't lose any.

Use a box-cutter to reduce triangle-shaped holes on both sides of your thicker boxes to give you makeshift handles for easier lifting!
4 Weeks Ahead: Gather Materials

If you do not already shop your seasonal/holiday things in plastic bins, then now's the time.  This way, as soon as you're moved , you can just move the plastic bins into your closet or basement without having to unpack their contents.

16.  Utilize Soft Items For Padding
You don't need as much packing stuff because you think!  All kinds of soft things around your home may be used to safely and efficiently pack other items.  Towels, sheets, socks, and other soft or cushy things make fantastic and free packing material. 

17.  Color-code Your Labels
White and black labels are difficult to distinguish if you would like to begin unpacking in a non-glacial pace.  Use colorful labels rather -- you can handwrite themsimply print some out -- and devise a color-coding system to your boxes to keep tabs on what's where.

18.  Use a Rubber Band to Keep Your Front Door Unlocked
When moving your boxes into your truck or van, you'll be going in and out of the house a lot.  Wrap a rubber band around one doorknob and extend it around your doorway to wrap the opposite end on the opposite knob.  This helps your doorway from accidentally getting shut and locking you out in case someone forgets to maintain it unlocked!

19.  Keep ALL your fluids separate
Cleaning supplies, dish-washing provides, whatever it is, if it is liquid put it into another plastic bin.  If it drops or spills throughout the move and you've left it in a different box, it'll soak everything.

20.  Bundle With a Guide
